It’s a bitter custody battle that has been dragging on for years, now reaching a new heartbreaking peak: Jaime King has lost custody of her children to her ex-husband, Kyle Newman.
A judge has now made the decision: Jaime King, 45, has to let go—literally. According to court documents obtained by People, the Sin City star and Kyle Newman, 49, technically share custody of their two sons, James (11) and Leo (9). However, the status has changed: her ex-husband now has sole decision-making authority over the children. From now on, they will live under their father’s care. Their mother is allowed to visit them three times a week for a certain period—but only under supervision.
Jaime King Can Only See Her Children Under Supervision
Jaime’s visits with her sons must be supervised by her mother Nancy, her sister Sandi, her brother-in-law, or Kyle’s brother Kevin. The supervision agreement was put in place because, according to court documents, the actress apparently did not complete a months-long addiction program. This program reportedly included weekly drug tests, aftercare, individual counseling to address her addiction issues, and joint counseling sessions with the children.
This painful turn of events was something King could not have foreseen about a year ago. In April 2024, it was actually the actress who took legal action against her ex-husband. At the time, she filed an emergency motion to modify the spousal and child support agreement. People also obtained these documents, in which Jaime claimed that Kyle was allegedly unable to pay child support for their children. According to the documents, she requested the annulment of the spousal support agreement that the couple had established in April 2022.
Divorce Escalated into Mutual Accusations
Kyle Newman did not take long to respond. He filed his own motion, claiming that his ex-wife had “failed to comply with court orders regarding child and spousal support for over a year.” He also stated that she had refused to “sign a judgment” based on their divorce agreement.
The conflict between the former spouses has only intensified, with allegations of Jaime’s supposed addiction playing a central role. However, Newman’s alleged behavior within the family structure has also come under public scrutiny.
Jaime King and Kyle Newman tied the knot in Los Angeles in 2007. In May 2020, the actress filed for divorce, along with a petition for a restraining order due to domestic violence and an urgent motion regarding custody and visitation rights for the children. In court documents, she also stated that in mid-January 2020, Newman had confided in family members about her alleged drug and alcohol addiction at her home. Following this “staged intervention,” as she described it, she agreed to undergo testing. According to King, the tests showed no traces of drugs or alcohol in her system, and she was discharged after just a few days.
Newman, however, stood by his accusations, calling his ex-wife a “chronic drug addict and alcoholic.” He claimed that she refused to acknowledge her problem and showed no willingness to seek treatment.
Did Jaime King Put Her Sons in Danger?
More dirty laundry was aired as the custody battle intensified. According to Kyle, “several friends” told him that Jaime had not only consumed alcohol but also taken opiates during her pregnancy with their firstborn. He also alleged that she continued using drugs while pregnant with their second child. Court documents state that during a prenatal appointment in the 20th week of pregnancy, they were informed that “our unborn child was also dependent due to her continued drug use.” But that wasn’t all. “At that appointment, we also learned that Leo Thames had a congenital heart defect and would need immediate surgery after birth to survive,” Newman said. “I was devastated.”
Kyle Newman also listed other incidents in which Jaime allegedly put their sons in danger. According to him, there were instances where she “drove under the influence with [their children] in the car, drank so heavily in front of them that they thought their mother was going to die, and abandoned them for days to get drunk and high instead of taking care of them.” He also recalled an incident in which Jaime left Leo Thames at a doctor’s appointment with the nanny, only to be spotted over half an hour later buying alcohol at a liquor store across the street.
These are serious allegations, and the custody battle shows no signs of ending anytime soon.
