Time and again, there are wild rumors about the Obamas’ marriage. Now, Michelle Obama has explained how the two of them handle it.
Michelle Obama, 61, has revealed how she deals with rumors about her marriage and family. According to People, the former First Lady and her older brother, Craig Robinson, 62, attended the South by Southwest festival in Texas to record a live episode of their new podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson.
One of the topics discussed was dealing with negative energy. After eight years in the White House and many more in the public eye, Obama has clearly gained a lot of experience in blocking it out. According to People, she shared with the audience how she and her husband, Barack Obama, 63, manage this.
Michelle Obama Doesn’t Read Social Media Comments
“People always ask Barack and me how we managed to stay hopeful, not just during our eight years in the White House but beyond that as well,” she said. There has been a lot of negative energy directed at them—”a lot of rumors, a lot of gossip…” What has helped them stay sane, and what they have tried to teach their daughters, is that “you can’t live through social media,” Michelle Obama explained. “I don’t think I’ve ever looked at a comment section, period.”
According to the report, she now warns others about this as well: “Don’t let that negative energy into your space. These are people who don’t know you. A lot of that stuff is made up and does nothing to enrich you,” she said. That doesn’t mean people shouldn’t stay informed. “But staying informed has nothing to do with the comment section.”
She continued: “I think we shouldn’t let ourselves get so caught up in social media that it becomes our only source of information. We need to broaden our perspective and step away from our smartphones.”
“With Everything Happening in the World, We Are All Looking for Answers”
Michelle Obama and her brother’s new podcast premiered on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, with its first episode. In this conversation-based format, the siblings offer themselves as “trusted advisors” to their listeners.
“With everything happening in the world, we are all looking for answers and people we can turn to,” Michelle Obama said when announcing the podcast. “My brother Craig and I created the IMO podcast to provide a space where people can come as they are, ask honest questions, share their thoughts, and have meaningful conversations about life,” she explained.
