Because she was in a bad mood that day, Selena Gomez almost unknowingly ruined her own engagement day with Benny Blanco.
Selena Gomez, 32, nearly ruined her own engagement day without realizing it. The singer shared this story on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she appeared with her fiancé, Benny Blanco, 37, to promote their joint album I Said I Love You First. According to Blanco, the engagement was very chaotic, and the days leading up to it were “the worst week” of his life.
The couple announced their engagement on Instagram in December 2024—an event that almost didn’t happen. On the day Blanco planned to propose, Gomez wasn’t feeling well at all. That day, a photoshoot for their album promotion had been scheduled. However, after waking up, she was feeling “a little grumpy,” she recalled.
“I thought to myself, ‘I’m really tired. This is too far.’ So I told him, ‘After this shoot, I’m going to hang out with my friends.’ And he started saying, ‘Uh okay, sure. We’ll see you when you’re here,’” Gomez shared during her conversation with Jimmy Fallon, 50, on the talk show.
Selena Gomez Was Upset Before the Proposal
Blanco admitted that he “naturally freaked out” at that moment. “She was mad! She almost didn’t come!” Gomez even wanted to reschedule the shoot for another day. The music producer added that proposing to someone is “the craziest thing in the world.” “Right before you tell someone you want to marry them forever, it’s like: ‘Show me how well you can lie to me.’ That’s the hardest part.”
For him, it was particularly challenging because he usually tells Gomez everything. “So she was just mad at me because I had told bad lies the day before.” He had hidden the engagement ring in a box inside a bag that he was sure no one would open. “It was the worst week of my life.”
Joint Album Gives Insight into Their Relationship
After the Only Murders in the Building actress made her relationship with Blanco public in December 2023, their engagement followed about a year later. Their joint album, set to be released on March 21, is meant to celebrate their love story and give fans “a unique insight into their relationship,” according to an announcement. The album tells their entire story—”before they met, how they fell in love, and what the future holds.”
Recently, Selena Gomez has been focusing primarily on her acting career. She was on a promotional tour for the film Emilia Pérez and her role as Jessi Del Monte. Her last studio album, Rare, was released in 2020.
